Department Summary:

BSU Aviation Science trains students under the supervision of experienced instructors and aviation professionals, positioning them for success in careers both on the ground and in the air. Flight training is conducted at the BSU Flight Training Center located at New Bedford Regional Airport in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Students pursue a Bachelors degree with concentrations in Aviation Management or Flight.

Position Summary:

The Aviation Safety Officer fosters a “safety first” culture by providing daily oversight, management, and leadership of safety programs for BSU Aviation Flight Operations and the Aviation Science department. This position reports to the Chief Instructor and works cooperatively with the Dean’s office in the Ricciardi College of Business and with the President’s office.

Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. (Subject to change) (Saturday and Sunday as days off)

This is an APA position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

This position is located at the BSU Flight Training Center located at New Bedford Regional Airport in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Essential Duties:

-Creates, executes, and evaluates regular safety-related educational programming for staff and students.

-Manages the BSU Aviation Safety Management program. Achieves appropriate industry safety program accreditation.

-Conducts biennial Emergency Response Plan training and simulation exercises.

-Conducts quarterly review of all operating publications to ensure alignment with relevant industry and university best practices. Recommends revisions as needed.

-Manages Hazardous Incident Tracking (HIT) and Continuous Improvement programs including data collection, analysis, reporting, and recommendation.

-Conducts biennial safety compliance audits. Reports audit methods, findings, and recommendations.

-Chairs the Safety Review Committee, conducts quarterly meetings, and provides reports to the Chief Instructor, Dean of the Ricciardi College of Business, Provost, and University President, and other administrators as required.

-Conducts appropriate annual professional development activities.

-Performs other duties as necessary to achieve program goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

-2-4 years of experience in developing and managing aviation safety programs.

-Demonstrated administrative and operational knowledge and experience with FAA Part 141 flight and ground training operations.

-Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships.

-Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

-Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.

-Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Possesses valid FAA Commercial Pilot (ASEL/AMEL), CFI/CFII/MEI, and FAA 3rd Class Medical certificate.

-Demonstrated experience with FAA-certified aviation safety program management.

-Experience as an FAA Part 141 flight and/or ground chief instructor, assistant chief instructor, or check instructor.

-Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

-Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and procedures.

-Aviation/flight training operations experience.
